So you’ve just bought a new house that has beautiful skylights that fill your favorite rooms with natural light.  Or, you’ve just finished a breathtaking addition to your home that infused your love of design with your love of nature, and now you are the proud owner of a beautiful room capped by skylights that bring the outdoors into your perfect indoor space.  The question before you now is, how to control that light and heat that comes into your new room so that you can create the ambiance that you want for day and night, all four seasons of the year.  For that, you may find that after researching the best shades for your skylight, motorized skylight shades are the answer.

Do people put shades over skylights?

Installing window shading for skylights is a great way to regulate and control the amount of light and heat that enters a room at any given time, depending on the time of day and the season.  Shading systems for skylights can also be very streamlined, so there is nothing that takes away from the dramatic effects of having a window in the ceiling.  You want to be certain that the focus of your skylight is on the light and the view of the sky that it brings to your special space, and not the shading system that you use to control that light.

Motorized shading allows you to do that with ease, as many skylights are up high and out of reach.  In the past, people may have shied away from purchasing skylight shading systems because they were challenging (think of dangerous, hanging cords, or of wielding a long pole with a hook on the end to drag a shade awkwardly across the window from one end to the other!) or because they had heard other people discuss the difficulties in finding skylight shades of the proper sizing for custom skylights.  But, because of the advances made in technology, motorized shading control systems are not only easy to install, they are easy to use, and now with advancements in motorized shading systems, they are quiet and programmable to set times of day, so that they are hardly noticeable to your guests and you yourself do not even have to think about them.  Motorized skylight shades are also typically the best option for commercial spaces, where there is high foot traffic.  The option to flip a switch or pre-program a system to create more or less light/heat in an area at any given time, makes much more sense then the disruptions of a manual skylight shade.

What is the Right Type of Skylight Shade for my Window?

Knowing that you can easily switch the ambiance of a room from natural light to more subdued lighting with the push of a button (or cool off a warm room at high noon on a summer day), makes installing electric skylight shades an easy decision.   But what type is best for your room?

Luckily, in addition to the technology advances in the actual controls of motorized window shades, there have also been many advances in the textiles and fabrics used for these shades, as well as the styles those shades are available in.  Most major window shade brands offer a vast array of skylight shading options, so it is up to you to decide what best compliments the design of your room and the architecture of your home.  Your choices will range between classic, Roman shades, folding shades, flat roller shades, sloping shades, and even skylight shades that are placed outside of your home (exterior skylight shades).

Skylights have become such a popular design option in decorating small spaces (especially in cities where wall window views can be obstructed and a skylight can offer a clear shot of beautiful blue sky) that manufacturers are much more willing and able to meet specifications for custom sizes and shapes.  In fact, custom skylights have become such an important part of design (and for some architects and designers specific shapes are almost a trademark) that you should find it easy to get the shade style and fabric that you want in the dimensions that you need (we’re always happy to help customers who are looking for custom skylight shading options!).

Once your motorized skylight shades have been installed, and you are able to take advantage of the best that natural light has to offer in ambiance and in heating, you will wonder what you ever did without them.
